Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has released an updated version of its R1 reasoning model, named R1-0528, marking a significant step in its competition with leading U.S. AI firms. The new model was quietly launched on the developer platform Hugging Face without an official announcement or detailed documentation.
Despite the low-profile release, R1-0528 has garnered attention for its performance. According to the LiveCodeBench leaderboard—a benchmark developed by researchers from UC Berkeley, MIT, and Cornell—the updated model ranks just below OpenAI’s o4 mini and o3 models in code generation tasks. Notably, it outperforms xAI’s Grok 3 mini and Alibaba’s Qwen 3 models, highlighting DeepSeek’s growing prowess in the AI domain.
Earlier this year, DeepSeek challenged prevailing assumptions about China’s AI capabilities, particularly in light of U.S. export controls on advanced computing hardware. By releasing AI models that rivaled or surpassed industry leaders at a fraction of the cost, DeepSeek demonstrated that significant advancements could be achieved without access to cutting-edge resources.
The initial launch of the R1 model in January had a notable impact on global tech markets, causing shares outside China to decline and prompting a reevaluation of the resources deemed necessary for AI development. In response, major Chinese tech companies like Alibaba and Tencent introduced their own models, claiming superior performance. Meanwhile, U.S. firms such as Google and OpenAI adjusted their strategies by offering more cost-effective access tiers and releasing models optimized for lower computing power.
Looking ahead, DeepSeek is anticipated to release its next-generation model, R2. While initially expected in May, the release has been delayed, with the company also focusing on enhancements to its V3 model. The AI community is closely monitoring these developments, as DeepSeek continues to influence the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence.
