India is taking a significant step forward in the field of ethical and responsible artificial intelligence (AI) with the planned rollout of four specialized AI tools under the IndiaAI initiative. These tools, part of the broader IndiaAI Mission led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), are set to go live on the government-backed AIKosha platform starting in September 2025. The launch is part of the country’s larger commitment to promoting safe, transparent, and trustworthy AI systems in both public and private sectors.
The four AI solutions to be launched include technologies focused on machine unlearning, bias mitigation, risk assessment, and fairness evaluation. These tools aim to strengthen the development and deployment of responsible AI systems in India. Each solution has been designed with ethical governance in mind, ensuring AI algorithms perform fairly across diverse demographic and social groups. The remaining four tools in the eight-part Responsible AI suite will be deployed by December 2025.
These solutions were developed under the ‘Safe and Trusted AI’ pillar of the IndiaAI initiative, which was announced earlier as part of India’s vision to become a global AI innovation hub. The mission has been allocated a ₹10,000 crore budget, signaling the government’s strong commitment to building AI infrastructure, governance frameworks, and innovation ecosystems.
The platform AIKosha, where these tools will be hosted, is a centralized hub for AI models, datasets, frameworks, and toolkits. It currently houses over 300 datasets and more than 80 foundational AI models. With the addition of these responsible AI solutions, AIKosha is expected to further empower developers, researchers, and businesses with access to tools that prioritize ethics and safety.
In addition to the Responsible AI tools, the IndiaAI initiative is also preparing to release 30 trial-ready AI applications. These applications, selected from over 900 proposals submitted through the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, address real-world challenges across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, governance, climate change, and learning disabilities. These applications will be made publicly available within the next month, offering a practical demonstration of how AI can improve citizen services and operational efficiency in both government and private enterprises.
Moreover, the government is also working to support the launch of the IndiaAI Innovation Centre and the IndiaAI Datasets Platform, in addition to the already announced IndiaAI Compute Capacity and the IndiaAI Startup Financing mechanism. These elements together are expected to create a robust AI ecosystem, allowing startups and researchers to build scalable and responsible AI solutions.
By prioritizing responsible and ethical AI, India is aligning itself with international AI safety standards and laying the groundwork for inclusive technological growth. The phased rollout of these AI tools reflects India’s focus on transparency, inclusivity, and long-term digital governance.
