Meta Platforms has entered into a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to secure nuclear power for its data centers, aiming to meet the escalating energy demands of its artificial intelligence (AI) operations. This strategic move underscores Meta’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and positions the company alongside other tech giants investing in nuclear power to support AI advancements.
Under the agreement, Meta will purchase electricity from Constellation’s Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois, starting in June 2027. The deal ensures the continued operation of the plant beyond the expiration of Illinois’ zero-emission credit program, which had previously subsidized the facility. The Clinton plant will increase its output by 30 megawatts, sufficient to power approximately 30,000 homes, and will preserve 1,100 local jobs while generating $13.5 million in annual tax revenue.
This partnership marks Meta’s first direct investment in nuclear energy and reflects a broader industry trend. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have also secured nuclear energy deals to support their growing data center needs. For instance, Microsoft has partnered with Constellation to revitalize the Three Mile Island Unit 1 plant, aiming to supply its data centers with nuclear power.
Meta’s investment aligns with its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. The company is also exploring additional nuclear energy projects, having shortlisted proposals to add 1–4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity in the U.S. by the early 2030s.
The move to secure nuclear power addresses the substantial energy requirements of AI technologies, which demand consistent and reliable power sources. By investing in nuclear energy, Meta aims to ensure the sustainability and scalability of its AI infrastructure while contributing to broader clean energy initiatives.
